Latin Classes
at Glenelg High School

Latin is a basic language for everyone. Over sixty percent of English words come from Latin and much of the literature of the western world is based upon poems, dramas, and stories of ancient Roman writers. Two millenia have passed since Casesar led the Roman armies in battle and shouted, "Veni, vidi, vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered), but his war strategies were studied by General Eisenhower during World War II and other great military figures of this century. Rome fell hundreds of years ago, but its laws and system of government were incorporated and adapted by the Founding Fathers in 1787 at the United States Constitutional Convention.

Lots of languages have lived and died, but Latin is still alive today because of what it represents: a civilation embracing arts, literature, sciences, and laws that we still study and use today. You Latin students are an important part of the living chain of learning from ancient Rome to the present day.
