Blanket Making Workshop

Girl Scout Troop 2527 has organized a blanket-making workshop to earn their Silver Award! Please come for three hours of FUN on Saturday, February 11, (1-4 pm) at Schooley Mill Park. They will make fleece blankets to donate to the House of Ruth, a domestic violence center that helps abused women and children find safety and security. Snacks and a fun patch are also included. "Open Mike Night" Teen Event - Slayton House Stage

Come join us for an "Open Mike Night" teen event on Friday, March 23, 2012, at 7-10 p.m. on the Slayton House Stage, located at 10400 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia. Guests will enjoy six 15-minute performances by local teens. Admission is $5 and includes pizza, sodas, and dessert. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Town Center by calling 410-730-4744. A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring-Tutoring, Inc.

A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring-Tutoring, Inc. seeks adult volunteers to work with students individually or in small groups, during the school day or in after-school programs. Volunteer mentor/tutors receive training and ongoing support, and should commit to one hour per week. Volunteer opportunities are available at the following schools:

  • Elementary: Atholton, Bryant Woods, Cradlerock, Deep Run, Forest Ridge, Guilford, Longfellow, Phelps Luck, Running Brook and Stevens Forest
  • Middle: Harper's Choice, Lake Elkhorn, Oakland Mills, Patuxent Valley and Wilde Lake
  • High: Wilde Lake High School

Girls on the RunĀ®

Girls on the RunĀ® is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to 13 years old. The programs combine training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the programs are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. The lessons promote self-challenge instead of competition; self-worth instead of societal worth; and cooperation instead of rivalry. The girls will meet after school twice a week for 10 weeks with the season-ending 5k to be held on May 19 in Howard County. Maryland Child and Family Development Laboratory

Are you the mother of a 6 or 7 year old child? The Maryland Child and Family Development Laboratory at the University of Maryland is looking for 6 and 7 year old children and their mothers to participate in a study about social and emotional experiences. The study takes about 2 hours; parking is free. They are interested in how children and their mothers respond to social and emotional events. They will measure you and your child's reactions using small sensors that record heart rate, breathing, and palm sweat during a variety of tasks including telling stories, looking at pictures, playing a computer game, and answering questions about yourselves. They generally schedule Monday through Friday, 2-6 pm, and Saturday and Sunday between 10 am-4 pm.






Silas Craft at Hunan Manor

The Howard Community College Educational Foundation and Hunan Manor Restaurant invite you to the 13th annual gourmet Chinese buffet to benefit the Silas Craft Collegians Scholarship Endowment. The dinner buffet will be served continuously from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, March 12, at the Hunan Manor Restaurant, 7091 Deepage Drive in Columbia. Leadership U Seeks High School Candidates for 2012 Program

High school sophomores interested in developing their leadership skills and learning more about Howard County are invited to apply to Leadership U, a leadership development and community service program sponsored by Leadership Howard County. Designed for students entering their junior year in high school, the Leadership U program empowers students to learn by doing. Students work in teams to discuss, reflect upon and develop solutions for problems that affect them and their peers in the community. They also develop mentoring relationships with adult community leaders, learn about Howard County's government, businesses and services, and hone their presentation skills. All high school sophomores who live in Howard County are eligible to apply.

U.S. Foundation for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competitions

Cheer on Howard County schools teams at the upcoming competitions:

  • March 8, 9, and 10, 2012 - Chesapeake Regional Competition at Baltimore Convention Center (Atholton HS, Hammond HS, Glenelg HS, Mt. Hebron HS, Marriotts Ridge HS, River Hill HS).

  • March 29, 30, and 31 - DC Regional Competition and the Washington Convention Center (Atholton HS, Hammond HS and Wilde Lake HS)

The FIRST Robotics Competition features teams of approximately 25 high school students, working with volunteer mentors to design and build a robot in six weeks from a "kit" of common key parts. This year's challenge, Robot Rumble, is played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes by trying to score as many of the basketballs in the hoops as possible during the 2-minute and 15-second match.






It's Time to Talk: a Forum on Dating Violence

Sponsored by the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County in partnership with HCC will host at the college (10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Duncan Hall, Kittleman Room, Columbia, on Friday, February 17, from 6-8:30 p.m. During this free community forum, participants will learn about this serious and preventable public health problem that can produce negative and long-lasting effects. Eagles Elite Lacrosse Camp, sponsored by CHS Boosters, is an exciting and comprehensive girls-only lacrosse camp, to be held at Centennial HS from June 18-21. Soccer Association of Columbia (SAC) stands as one of the country's foremost youth soccer association and is home to 6,000 local soccer players. Spring Soccer Greater Laurel United Soccer Club for ages 4-18 - Players are guaranteed 50% of game play time. Single gender leagues. Coaches select the time, location and frequency of practice. Teams practice 1-2 times per week. Games are usually Saturday with occasional Sunday and evening games during the week. Practices and games are played on Greater Laurel Area Fields.
