EMPOWERMENT + ACCOUNTABILITY = PERFORMANCE
Our theme this year is "Empowerment through Teaching and Learning." One of our core values at Oakland Mills is EMPOWERMENT. The most important place in our school is the classroom. Everything else that we do is reliant upon the teaching and learning that takes place there. It is crucial that we spend some time EMPOWERING our students and teachers to ensure learning is occurring in a manner that equips our students to meet or exceed rigorous performance standards. In an effort to accomplish this, we have totally revamped our School Improvement Process. Instead of a small group of staff members meeting on a monthly basis to discuss school improvement issues, the entire school will participate in monthly "emPOWERment Hours" where teachers will be divided into groups to work on one of four key areas:
- Instruction
- Assessment
- Integrating Technology
- Behavior Support
In an effort to EMPOWER our students in one of our four key areas, we will be implementing an exciting program called Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS). Staff members have been meeting this summer to design a systematic plan for communicating and teaching our expectations for student behavior and identifying ways to acknowledge students for meeting those expectations. We believe that using this positive and school-wide approach to addressing behavior within the building will improve on our already established safe and nurturing learning environment.
