Interdisciplinary
Follow-up to Summer Reading
Objectives:
- Students will work in small groups to acquire and analyze
interdisciplinary information about Zora Neale Hurston, the time
period, and the environment.
- Each group will organize and present to the total class the
pertinent findings from their research activity.
Time Requirements:
- Three or four 90-minute class periods.
Materials:
- Internet capability
- SIRS and other relevant databases
- Print materials on assigned topics
- The novel
Proceedures:
(Class One)
1. Place students in groups and assign one of the following
topics to each group:
a. Hurricanes, especially in Florida in 1935.
b. The Everglades
c. Zora Neale Hurston
d. Seminole Indians of Florida
e. Alice Walker (Hurston's influence)
f. The Harlem Renaissance
g. Florida Folklife
h. Langston Hughes
2. Divide class into two groups and rotate use of the Internet
and search of electronic databases and the print materials in
40-minute intervals.
a. When performing the Internet search, students will survey
bookmarked Internet sites in order to find information on assigned
topics.
b. Students searching print resources and electronic sources
will look for similar information.
(Class Two)
3. Students will meet in groups to compile information, create
visual and/or handout, and organize presentation.
(Classes Three and Four )
4. In groups, students will present findings to total class.
Assesments:
- Students will receive points for on-task behavior during
the internet/media center search.
- Students will receive points for participation in the preparation
for the presentation. Each student in the group will summarize
in paragraph form his/her own contributions to the day's activities
and his/her expected duties in the actual presentation.
- The project itself will be assessed with a grading checklist.
