The Howard County Elementary School Gifted and Talented Band consists of the top elementary musicians from the entire county. The mission for the Elementary Gifted and Talented Band is to provide students with a challenging and rewarding musical experience. Children are nominated to audition by their respective band directors based on their demonstration of excellent music skills and cooperation in the school band program. The GT Band is conducted by Mr. Kendall Davis and Mrs. Peggy White. The Howard County Elementary Honors Band is an honors ensemble made up of students from every elementary school in the county. Their respective band directors nominate eligible students, and the co-directors, Mr. Frank Owens and Ms. Karen Zepp, select the participants based on the instrumentation needs of the band. The mission for the Elementary Honors Band is to provide students with a challenging, fun and rewarding musical experience, and to assemble a band truly representative of Howard County's rich diversity.

Frank Owens After graduating from Fauquier HS in 1984, Mr. Owens studied at the Peabody Conservatory from 1984-1988, receiving degrees in both trumpet performance and music education. After a year teaching band at three Baltimore City middle schools, Mr. Owens was hired as the director of bands at Centennial Lane ES in 1989. He has held this position since that time. Mr. Owens lives in Granite, Maryland, with Susan, his wife and high school sweetheart, Lauren, their 6 year old daughter, Buster the cat and Chester, Dune and Cool Hand Luke, their three horses.
Karen Zepp Ms. Zepp received a Bachelor of Music in Education from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Winchester, VA, in 1979 and holds a Master of Music degree in flute performance from University of Maryland, College Park. Ms. Zepp has served as adjudicator for All State Band, GT Band, and Solo and Ensemble Festival in Howard, Carroll and Baltimore counties. Ms. Zepp was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Howard County Music Educator of the Year Award. She has a 21 year old daughter, Rachael, and lives in Columbia with her cat, Angel. |
