Scholarship Opportunities for OMHS Seniors

The Oakland Mills High School PTSA will award four scholarships to students who have shown a commitment to the OMHS community and the community at-large. Two $1,000 scholarships will go to students planning to attend a four year college. These scholarships were established in honor of Sue Ann Tabler, former principal of Oakland Mills High School. Two $500 scholarships will also be awarded to students planning to attend a junior or technical college. Applications for the PTSA scholarship are in the Guidance Office. Please see Ms. Hart for details. The application deadline is April 27.

Also, the PTA Council of Howard County is prepared to provide a limited number of scholarships to college-bound seniors. Students seeking financial assistance for college are strongly encouraged to apply in one or more of the following categories: academic, teacher education, community service, and trade/technical/2-year associates program. The application is available in each high school Guidance Department and readily available year round for students on the PTACHC website, www.ptachc.org. The deadline for submitting applications to the PTACHC office is April 15th.

After Prom Volunteers Needed

The OMHS PTSA is looking for parents willing to come out and help keep our teens safe and happy on Prom Night. We are hosting our 11th Annual After Prom Event on Saturday, May 19th immediately following the Prom.  This year the event will be held at Brunswick Lanes in Columbia, MD with set-up starting at 10:30pm. Volunteers are needed throughout the night and for clean-up, which begins at 4:30am.  Volunteers do not have to stay the entire night, even a couple of hours here and there will go far to helping out the weary all-nighters!

Please contact Mona Curran at omhsafterprom@yahoo.com to offer your assistance.

What is this Year's Theme?
This year's theme is "Diversity Means...", which may be interpreted in any way students feel appropriate, as long as guidelines for the program are followed.

What Can Be Submitted?
Any original work of art that is inspired by the theme in the following categories can be submitted:

  1. Visual arts - Drawing, painting, collage, print-making, fiber work, metal etching.
  2. Music - A cappella or instrumental compositions, with or without words.
  3. Literature - Fiction or nonfiction in prose, poetry, drama, song lyrics, short story.

  5. Choreography/dance -Videotape your originally choreographed dance.
  6. Film/Video – Fiction/nonfiction video of original work with/without sound; may use computer.

Any student at Oakland Mills High School may participate. Student's work will be judged within the categories listed above by the following age group:

Senior Category: Grades 9 through 12

How Many Entries?
A student may submit as many entries as he/she wishes. Only four entries per age group per artistic category will be forwarded to the Howard County PTA level.

How is the Artwork Judged?
Judges are volunteers from the community with expertise and background in the arts. All entries will be judged on creativity, interpretation of the theme, and artistic merit.

Deadlines?
All entries must be turned in by the end of the school day Monday, December 12, 2011. Completed/signed entry form must be attached to each entry. Entries should be brought to Student Services Center and placed in "Reflections" box.
