The Howard County Police Department will be conducting the Collision Avoidance Training Class for 2012, with classes beginning March 23-24 and continuing through December 2012.

The C.A.T. program is an advance defensive driving and vehicle control program for licensed teenage drivers ages 16-20 years old. The two day program (12 hours) is designed to provide young drivers with the knowledge and understanding of vehicle dynamics.

The first day of the program is classroom instruction (4 hours).  The classroom portion of the program gives students a better understanding of why the vehicle responds the way it does and prepares them for the behind-the-wheel exercise on the driving course.  The second day is the behind-the-wheel training course (8 hours).  This course provides practical exercises that demonstrate how the vehicle responds in a given situation or how to regain control of the vehicle once it is out of control.  The driving skills addressed in the program are: evasive maneuvers, threshold/emergency braking, forward serpentine, cornering, backing, reverse serpentine, and skid and off-road recovery.

The Howard County Police Department prides itself on making a difference and providing quality services to the citizens of this county.  One of the goals of this Police Department is to continue to promote traffic safety within the County.  Classes begin March 23-24. The cost to each student is $95.00 for both classes.
