DID YOU KNOW?
Sometimes we hear stories on various news programs from all around the world about the millions of people who are hungry: 800 million people. But what does it really mean to be hungry? Read Rehka's Story to learn about some of the effects of hunger and poverty.
There are many ways that you can help to make a difference in the lives of those who are hungry every day. By completing this research module and using your skills in math, social studies, reading, writing and technology, you will be able to create change in the world!
THE PROBLEM
Unfortunately, the problem of world hunger is not a very frequent news story unless something very dramatic happens, like war. Hunger is often a silent problem and a silent killer. The U.S. government is looking at its budget year and evaluating how much it will spend on local programs such as food stamps and school lunches, and international programs, like foreign aid and humanitarian assistance. Without much attention on the news, these programs can be passed over quickly and the necessary allocations may not be made to help those who need it most. You and your classmates need to conduct a campaign to ignite interest and action in your community to voice your concern about the problems of world hunger.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT
In order to educate others about the problem of world hunger, you will first need to educate yourself. The class will be divided into groups of six. This way, each pair can cover one of the three main questions and then you will compile your information into a final product. (Depending on the availability of computers, however, you may decide to work on all of the pieces as a complete group.) Each group will develop a pamphlet to hand out to a particular audience: other students in your school, your parents or community leaders. Before putting this together, determine who exactly your audience will be and design the pieces accordingly. This assignment will take about five days in the computer lab to complete. Throughout this process, you will be answering various questions about world hunger which you will include in your informational pamphlet. The parts of this assignment are as follows:
| Overview of the assignment and the problem of world hunger. | |
| Research statistics to develop an understanding of the depth of the problem of world hunger. | |
| Read stories about the problem of world hunger to put a human face on this global concern. | |
| Research programs provided by the federal government, by private voluntary organizations, and in your local community to combat the problem of hunger and poverty. | |
| Compile the information you have learned into a pamphlet for distribution to get others informed and involved in taking action against world hunger. |
