STEP ONE:

GETTING STARTED

Over the past few weeks your social studies class has been studying the tropical rainforest. As this unit progresses, more and more students in your class are becoming concerned about what is happening In South America. During social studies you may have spent some time reading books and articles about the rainforest. The internet is another tool for learning. Click on the following website to learn more about the tropical rainforest.

RAINFOREST RECOVERY

A large lumber/hardware chain has been selling products made from old growth trees located in the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada. The Canadian elementary school students are worried that this temperate rainforest will eventually be destroyed. The students have contacted your social studies teachers because they know that you are studying the tropical rainforest as a part of your social studies curriculum. The students want to use your superior knowledge, research skills, and creativity to create a hyperstudio stack presentation to convince the Canadian people to do whatever they can to protect the Great Bear Rainforest. During your hyperstudio presentation your must answer the following questions:

*What is a temperate rainforest?

*Where are temperate rainforests located?

*How do they differ from tropical rainforests?

*Where is the Great Bear Rainforest located? (Be sure to include a map.)

*What animal species live in the Great Bear Rainforest? (Choose one species to investigate in greater detail.)

*Why is the Great Bear Rainforest at risk for being totally destroyed?

*What can be done to preserve the Great Bear Rainforest?

Since the Canadian students want to use your Hyperstudio Stack, it needs to be a quality example of informative writing. Remember to include the following components in your stack:

*Title page

*Table of Contents

*At least one card for each question

* A picture to go with each page

*Accurate vocabulary for discussing temperate rainforests

*Appropriate use of capitalization, punctuation, and grammar
