Principal's Update

3/28/2011

Dear Parents,

Hopefully, you saw the email that went out Friday about the passing of Family and Consumer Science teacher Deb Welsh.  If not, a letter was also given to all students to take home today.  Please review this information and discuss it with your child.  Even if your child did not have Mrs. Welsh as a teacher, he or she may be affected because his or her friends and classmates did.  It’s a good opportunity to see how your child may be feeling.

The following news is provided to help keep you informed:

Kudos

More good news for Jai Thakor.  This past weekend, Jai was a grand prize winner at the Baltimore Science Fair.  Next month, Jai will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair.  Congratulations and good luck!  Jai’s brother Vir also earned several prizes at the fair and River Hill student Heejo Choi won Honorable Mention in the Division 1 High School Biological Sciences category.  Great job!

Lateness/Parking Lot Safety

Since we started cracking down on tardiness, we’ve seen a drastic decrease in the number of students coming in late . . . with the exception of rainy days.  Just a reminder that drivers (students and parents alike) should allow themselves more time to deal with delays on inclement weather days.

Being on time is important, but so is safety.  We’ve had numerous students, staff, and parents report unsafe driving practices lately.  Please be aware and make sure your child is aware of the importance of obeying state driving laws and adhering to the traffic patterns and procedures at River Hill.  Some specific issues are speeding, cutting off drivers when changing lanes, not turning into the appropriate lane from Route 108, and yielding to school buses exiting the parking lot.  All drivers—staff, students, and parents—appreciate your efforts to follow these rules.  Thanks.

Driver Safety Presentation

Glenelg HS is hosting a driver safety presentation on April 4th at 6pm in their cafeteria.  Just a reminder that all students who park on school property need to attend a driver safety program.  When we open parking to juniors after seniors graduate, all students will need to attend one of these classes.  We will hold a presentation here as well, but we wanted to make sure you knew you could attend any of the high schools’ programs.
