The Pre-Engineering Academy, also known as Project Lead the Way, offers a dynamic high school program that provides students with real-world learning and hands-on experience. Students interested in engineering, bio mechanics, aeronautics, and other applied math and science arenas will discover PLTW is an exciting portal into these industries. This academy is part a national curriculum that articulates through a major University in every state. The students earn college credits through these classes. Here in Maryland, that university is UMBC. Summary |

Students who would benefit from additional support for making career academic choices and preparing for college and employment should enroll in Career Research and Development I (CRD I) as early as possible. Students seeking post secondary education are advised to take at least two years of World Language. Students seeking degrees in engineering are also advised to enroll in Physics and Chemistry . |

Prerequisites and Requirements Pre-Engineering Academy students must enter the program in the ninth grade. Students will take Introduction to Engineering design and must be concurrently enroller in Algebra I/Data Analysis as a minimum level mathematics course. You also must...
In the senior year Engineering Deisgn and Development Course, students work in teams to resaech, design, and construct a solution to an open-ended engineering problem. Students apply principles developed in the four preceding course and are guided by a mentoring engineer. They must present progress reports, submit a final written report and defent their solution to a panel outside reviewers at the end of the school. Students are required to take four years of math. Students are also encouraged to apply for summer inernship work with local engineering firms. Although, this is not required. |

High school students may receive college credit for ENES1-1 at UMBC by completing Engineering Design and Development (Grade 12) and all courses leading up to it (POE, IED, DE and a technical elective) with an average of B by being enroolled in a "Project Lead The Way" (PLTW) certified school, by meeting college enrollment requirements and by paying a designated tuition for each course. In addition, students must complete a college credit exam or submit an appropriate portfolio. |

There are no formal certification tests given, however, students who have taken high school pre-engineering courses and/or received transcripted co0llege credit have demonstrated their commitment to a rigorous, challenging program. They are prime candidates for a college or university engineering program. Students are encouraged to interview with the head of college programs to discuss what they have learned in high school and what college courses would be appropriate
