Principal's Update

March 21 , 2011

Dear Parents,

It’s another busy week at River Hill. Spring sports are finally started their games, honor society inductions take place on Tuesday, and Wednesday; junior interviews are Wednesday and Thursday…the list goes on and on. Never a dull moment at RHHS. I hope to see you out and about at some of this week’s events!

The following news is provided to help keep you informed:
Kudos
On Friday the 18th, I had the pleasure of watching the RHHS Wind Ensemble perform at the Music for All Festival in Indianapolis. The students did an outstanding job and certainly demonstrated they were worthy of being one of 26 groups selected to perform at this prestigious national festival. Congratulations to the Wind Ensemble and their directors Joe Fischer and Michael Blackman!

Kudos to Lilian Sun who won this year's Olin E. Teague Memorial Scholarship as “an outstanding graduating high school student who intends to pursue higher education in science and technology.” The award is based on the research paper she wrote about her experience as an intern at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center last summer through the National Space Club. The scholarship provides a one-time grant of $4000 toward her college education, an award she’ll receive at the Annual Robert H. Goddard Memorial Dinner on Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Washington Hilton. Great job Lilian!

Congratulations to Angela Rusconi who was notified last week that she is a recipient of the Northrop Grumman Scholarship through the PSAT/NMSQT scholarship program. Angela is planning on studying engineering and is still deciding where she will attend college next year. Great job!!!

One of the things I love about my job is receiving letters commending our students. This past week four of our students were recognized for the outstanding job they did selling programs at the Maryland State Girls’ Basketball Tournament. Tournament Director Diane George noted that they had never sold out of programs until this year. Well, that’s what happens when River Hill FBLA students get involved. Great job Aryo Donboli, Jack Fitzpatrick, Tim Fisher, and Karthik Krishnan.

Red Cross Club Collection for Japan

River Hill’s Red Cross Club is collecting donations for the aid efforts in Japan. Donations will be taken during all four lunch shifts every day this week. In addition, if you would like to write a check, we can include it with our donation. Checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross with RHHS Red Cross written in the comment line. Thanks for helping us help those in need of assistance.

JV Winter Sports Wrap-Up

JV Girls Basketball info was not available in time for last issue. Here’s a summary from Coach Francouer:

Our River Hills JV-Girls Basketball team this year, consisted of five freshmen and seven sophomores. We finished the season with an overall record of 12-9 and a county record of 12-7. With 7 new players and a new Coach (new to River Hill) we knew this was going to be a season of growth. After week one it was also obvious that all of the girls' personalities, potential and work ethic, would make it a very enjoyable season, which it was!

The team was led by Captain’s Lauren Jones and Lia Valdesuso. Sierra Miles, Soma Umeozulu, Colleen McKenna, Andre Nichols, Tyler Triplett, and Rachel Bindel made major contributions in the scoring department. But the points didn't stop there. Coming off the bench, Elenda Nwandu, Ciana Robinson, Ashley Sanco, and Caitlin Gilbert also chipped in points. Our leading scorer was Lauren Jones averaging 11.7 pts a game. By season's end, Jones, Nichols, Triplett, Valdesuso, and Umeozulu, were all called up to the varsity team for playoffs. Special thanks to our team manager Olivia Rojas and Assistant Coach Anthony Awkward for all their assistance this season.
Kudos to the JV Girls basketball team and their Coach Bianca Francouer.

School Improvement Team Again and Coffee w/ the Principal
SIT is meeting again this Wednesday at 2:30pm in room 241. There was so much to discuss last week that we’ll be continuing to look at some of the data from the Race to Nowhere surveys and identifying actions that SIT can take to address these issues.
The next coffee with the principal is this Thursday March 24th at 8am in the cafeteria. Hope to see you there!
Dress for Success Days
March 23rd and 24th are Dress for Success Days at River Hill. Students are all asked to dress for success which means . . . guys wearing a collared shirt, tie, and dress slacks and ladies wearing a skirt, dress, or dress slacks and blouse or sweater. Students will also practice shaking hands with adults in the building. Administrators and counselors will be randomly distributing prizes to students who are dressed for success.

Operation Smile is a worldwide children's charity organization that helps treat facial deformities. You can help these needy children live a lifetime of smiles. A portion of the proceeds from the 14th Annual RHHS Talent Show will be donated to Operation Smile. Come on out on Friday, April 1st and help make a child smile. Tickets are $7.00 in advance and $9.00 at the door. Show starts at 7:00 p.m. Advanced tickets can be purchased at all lunch periods on Wed. March 30th, Thurs. March 31 and Friday April 1st.
