Student Services News
Attention Juniors, Seniors and parents: The 20ll Maryland General Assembly passed a bill that prohibits any new awards in the Maryland Distinguished Scholars Program. As a result no new scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-12 academic year and beyond. This will result in two immediate changes to the Distinguished Scholars Program. First, those students in the class of 2011 recognized as finalist in the Maryland Distinguished Scholars Program last year during their junior year in high school will not be offered a monetary award. Secondly, in reference to the students that applied this year as juniors, class of 2012, in the areas of academics and talent in the arts, these applications will not be processed.

From the Health Room
It’s flip flop season (or maybe it never ended) Yes, it’s flip flop season again and with the warm weather, it seems that almost no one wears anything but flip flops. But are you aware that flip flops are terrible for your feet and for your kids feet?. In today’s Washington Post, Rachel Saslow writes about the cons of the flops. Keep them in mind for yourself and your kids.
Between now and September, D.C. Podiatrist, Howard Osterman, will see at least one flipflop related injury per day.
Common flip flop injuries include:
• overuse injuries and such as stress fractures of the metatarsals (the long bonest hat reach out to the toes), and other toe injuries from stubbing.
• Plantar fasciitis: a very painful inflammation of the tissue along the bottom of the foot – caused because the flops have little or no arch support
• Blisters from the toe thongs
• Altered gait from the mechanics of stepping with flip flops
